Mozzarella Basil Tart

I found this recipe on an adorable blog and I’ve been wanting to try it.  I finally bought a tart pan, so today is the day!  Anything with mozzarella, basil, and white pepper sounds delightful!  You can read the blog post here:

I changed a few small things.  I used a cornmeal dough for the tart crust so it wouldn’t taste as fattening.

Cornmeal Dough

  • flour, 1 Cup
  • cornmeal, 1/2 Cup
  • salt, 1/2 tsp
  • butter, 6 Tbsp, cut into pieces
  • 1 egg
  1. In a large bowl combine first 3 ingredients
  2. Add butter and mix with your fingers
  3. Add egg and 1/4 Cup or water
  4. Stir until the dough comes together
  5. Add dough to your tart pan

Mozzarella Basil Tart

  • 4 Roma tomatoes, thinkly sliced
  • 2 cups grated mozzarella cheese, low moisture (Don’t use fresh-it’s too watery)
  • 1 cup loosely packed basil, chopped
  • 2 cloves minced garlic
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese
  • 1/8 tsp white pepper
  1. Spread 1 Cup of the Mozzarella cheese evenly over the bottom of the pie crust.
  2. Spread tomato slices over the cheese
  3. Sprinkle with basil
  4. Sprinkle with minced garlic
  5. Dollop and spread the mayonaise cheese mixture on top (Leftover mozzarella, parmesan, white pepper, and mayo mixed together)
  6. Bake at 375 for 35 minutes  (If cheese starts to brown you can cover it with foil towards the end of the cooking time)

The flavor is divine!
